That’s right, Microsoft has met and exceeded business expectations in social responsibility and this is just the tip of the iceberg. The Just Capital nonprofit recently released the 2018 Rankings of Businesses based on the impact each company has on the environment, products, jobs, communities and shareholders. Microsoft shows that it’s entirely possible to be #1 in the software industry, and in business, by implementing social responsibility on a micro and macro level.
Workers rights and fair treatment have scored highest on the list, making them the leader in the their industry and overall. Additionally, adapting business practices to comply with environmental change has driven Microsoft to the top, scoring 1st in the software Industry and overall, showing that it is entirely possible to be profitable while striving for a green economy. Now we know that there are tons of other factors that come in to play, not forgetting that Microsoft is a tech giant with indispensable amounts of capital and resources that has inevitably helped push them to the top.
On the other end, Tesla finds itself in the bottom 10%, even though it their best year in business. Their weakest links were tied to worker treatment, lack of ethical leadership and poor community support. There isn’t much to say here. Tesla lost points with worker mistreatment and harsh working conditions, as well their involvement with oppressive governments and authorities.
Overall, the shift that tech companies are taking towards a greener future is a genuine one and we’ve yet to see how impactful that shift will be.
